The short version

No accounts, no sign-up, no ads, no analytics, no tracking cookies.
We don't ask for your location and we don't collect anything about you.
Your settings stay on your own device. The map and weather layers load straight from the services that make them, so those services see your request, as with any website.
We don't sell or share data, because we don't have any.

What stays on your device

Powder Howler remembers your settings (units, light or dark look, map style and pass filter) in your browser's storage, so they're there next time. So the app can open without a connection, it also keeps a copy of its own pages and of the latest forecast and snow data it downloaded. None of this is sent to us. To remove it, clear this site's data in your browser settings, or uninstall the app from your home screen.

What our host sees

The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web server, Cloudflare receives your IP address and basic browser details to deliver the pages and to protect the site from abuse. We don't run analytics on top of that and we don't keep our own visitor logs.

Map and weather services

To draw the map, your browser asks these services directly for map tiles, radar images and weather data. Each of them receives your IP address and which part of the map you're looking at, and handles it under its own privacy policy:

NOAA and the US National Weather Service (radar, fronts, precipitation forecast, satellite clouds)
Environment and Climate Change Canada, MSC GeoMet (snow forecast, wind, precipitation)
Esri ArcGIS and the US Geological Survey (satellite imagery)
Amazon Web Services open data (terrain elevation for 3D and slope shading)
avalanche.org (US avalanche danger map)

Forecasts, observed snow and Canadian avalanche danger are collected by our own server once an hour, so your browser doesn't contact those sources. Links to resorts, webcams and avalanche centres take you to their own sites, with their own policies.

Children

Powder Howler isn't aimed at children under 13. Since we collect nothing, we don't collect anything from children either.

Changes

If we ever add accounts, alerts, analytics or payments, we'll update this page before those go live and change the date at the top. The phone apps will follow the same policy.
